Will the real Dan Altavilla please stand up? After impressing the M's in limited action in 2016, Altavilla broke camp with the M's last year and flopped, posting a 7.36 ERA in April and only getting it down to 5.46 before being sent down to Triple-A. He spent most of July and August in Tacoma, where he was exceptional—2-0, 1.54 ERA, 6 saves, and 36 Ks in 20 appearances. That earned him a trip back to the big club, and sure enough, Mr. Hyde had been replaced by Dr. Jeckyll. He threw 17 innings for the M's in August and September with a sparkling 2.12 ERA to show for it.

Altavilla says he's figured out his first-half problems and that they won't be an issue going forward. "I was trying to do a little too much—a lot of rotation at the top and that leads to a lot of inconsistency with the fastball and slider." He credits Tacoma pitching coach Lance Painter with aiding him in his mechanics, specifically an adjustment to his windup, that helped correct the fault.

Will that prove true? We'll find out soon enough.
