Freitas was added to Seattle’s roster at the start of the season when Mike Zunino went down with an oblique injury on opening day. Apparently the 29-year-old journeyman impressed Scott Servais and company because three weeks later, when Zunino returned to the club, it was Mike Marjama, who’d won the backup catcher spot during spring training, who was sent back to Triple-A Tacoma. Freitas is the better defender and he’s shown a bit of pop in his bat too, with four of his first eight hits this year going for extra bases. Freitas posted a solid .272/.358/.414 slash line in his eight minor-league seasons, but only reached the Majors for the first time last August when he debuted with the Atlanta Braves.
