Cast your ballot
All-Star voting season is upon us. Sadly, you can no longer vote in person at the ballpark; gone are the days of whiling away the between-innings time by amusing your fellows with ballots filled out for the "all-disabled list team" or "worst-stats-ever team" along with your real choices, consigned to history are seating areas littered with little paper ballot chads.
But, there is the Internet, where we are right this very moment. And you can vote for deserving Mariners and other players online at the official MLB All-Star ballot. Ballot-box stuffing has been legalized to a degree, even encouraged, which seems wrong but I guess that's the world we live in now.
Legitimate cases can be made for Dee Gordon, Jean Segura, and Mitch Haniger to be All-Star starters, but they have a tough row to hoe given their competition at second base, shortstop, and the outfield, respectively.
José Altuve is the standard bearer at second, with KC rookie phenom Whit Merrifield getting some attention and Gleyber Torres owning all the Yankee fans' votes, making Dee the longest shot of the three M's mentioned. Segura has a better chance, having only to overcome the Orioles' Manny Machado and Cleveland's Francisco Lindor, assuming Andrelton Simons and Elvis Andrus don't make a splash in the coming weeks. As for Haniger, he needs better name recognition—Mike Trout and Aaron Judge are going to get votes on their reputations, Mickey Brantley and Mookie Betts on their numbers; but Seattle fans can push Mitch into the picture!
Balloting ends July 5th at 9pm PDT.
