It's a little surprising to see Freitas still on the Mariners' roster. Leading up to and even during spring training, reports were that the M's were actively looking to acquire a different catcher to serve as Omar Narváez's backup, but all they ended up with was underachieving veteran José Lobaton as a non-roster invitee to spring camp and here we are with Freitas still in the role.
Last year, Freitas bounced back and forth between the M's and Triple-A, and while he absolutely tore it up with the Rainiers—.349/.428/.527 in 166 plate appearances—he was unimpressive with the big club. He is a decent receiver, and by far the better defensive option to Narváez at this point, so it appears he'll get plenty of playing time—at least until the M's find someone else on the waiver wire they feel like taking a chance on.
