How crazy of a beard do you have to have in Major League Baseball these days to earn a 2018 headline that begins: “The man with the weird beard”?
Gearrin's weird beard
The headline honoree wasn’t Dallas Keuchel, Justin Turner, Jayson Werth, or Dustin Ackley, but new M's relief pitcher Cory Gearrin, who was then pitching middle relief for the San Francisco Giants after a stint with the Atlanta Braves. And that’s the point. The Braves, like the Yankees, are anti-hirsute, the Giants ain’t, so Gearrin decided to let his Brian Wilson freak flag fly. As a result, after a nationally televised season opener, his phone blew up with calls from friends and family in Rhea County, Tennessee, who hadn’t seen him for several months. “‘Wow,’ for the most part, was the overall response,” he told The Athletic. Asked if was emulating anyone in particular, he responded, “You know, um, Tom Hanks in 'Castaway,'” he said. “And the Geico caveman. I’m kind of going for that.”
Gearrin was taken by the Braves in the fourth round of the 2007 draft as a reliever and that’s what he’s been; he’s never started a game at any professional level. He lost all of 2014 to Tommy John surgery. In his career, he’s faced the Mariners four times (we’ve batted .333/.368/.389 against) but has never pitched in Seattle, where freak flags are not only welcome but hardly noticed.
