The top pitching prospect in the Mariners' system, Kirby lost the spring training battle to make the opening day roster to fellow rookie Matt Brash. But Brash proved to be not-ready-for-prime-time, so Kirby, who had begun his year getting batters out at Double-A Arkansas, was given the opportunity to replace him early in May. Yet another Mariner who was promoted very quickly, skipping the Triple-A level entirely, Kirby is faring better than some might have expected. He's made six starts thus far, three of them meeting the quality start threshold, including two six-inning scoreless efforts. There have been some growing pains, to be sure—the Red Sox tagged him pretty hard, as did the A's—but by and large he's looked like he belongs here in The Show. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his early returns are the strikeouts—he's racked up nearly one K per inning pitched, and fully two-thirds of all his pitches have been strikes. He's stingier than even Marco Gonzales with walks, too; going back to his college days, he's allowed fewer than two per nine innings, and at this writing his big league K:BB ratio is an astonishing 31:3. Not too shabby.
