Roster juggling

The Mariners' active roster has seen a lot of additions and subtractions since Opening Day in Tokyo, with players seemingly coming and going several times a week, and we're due for some more before today's game versus the Twins.

Part-time Mariners

M's who have come and gone from the
active roster already this season
Pos Player Current assignment
OF Ichiro Suzuki Retired
C David Freitas Milwaukee
CF Braden Bishop Tacoma (AAA)
RHP Dan Altavilla Arkansas (AA)
RHP Hunter Strickland Injured list
RHP David McKay Tacoma (AAA)
RHP Nick Rumbelow Tacoma (AAA)
RHP Matt Festa Tacoma (AAA)
RHP R.J. Alaniz Tacoma (AAA)
RHP Shawn Armstrong Baltimore
LHP Justus Sheffield Tacoma (AAA)
CF Mallex Smith recalled to Seattle today
IF Dylan Moore Injured list
RHP Chasen Bradford Tacoma (AAA)
IF Shed Long Tacoma (AAA)
RHP Felix Hernández Injured list

Center fielder Mallex Smith is expected to be recalled from Tacoma today, with infielder Shed Long being optioned back down in a corresponding move. Pitcher Wade LeBlanc will be activated off the injured list at some point during the Minnesota series with a reliever to be determined either optioned down or designated for assignment to make room. This on top of the recent placement of Felix Hernández and Dylan Moore on the injured list and the promotion of Long and shortstop JP Crawford to the Mariners.

The current structure of the roster again has only three bench players and eight relief pitchers, a dangerous split that manager Scott Servais and GM Jerry Dipoto are returning to despite the obvious drawbacks; this structure's failures came into play during the recent road trip, when both Dee Gordon and Moore had to leave with injury and the M's were forced to play someone in the middle infield that had never played there before (Edwin Encarnación, who himself was nearly injured on his first play at second base).

More moves are on deck, as injured players Kyle Seager, Sam Tuivailala, and Gerson Bautista are all on minor-league rehab assignments and will be ready to return sometime this month; when they do, some interesting decisions will have to be made to clear room for the on the active roster.
