Trade recaps and the state of things

Greetings, you rare and few denizens of grandsalami.net. It's been a minute.

Actually, it's been about a week and a half since anything was posted here on the site; your humble webmaster has been occupied with other things of late, really poor timing in terms of running a baseball website since it happened to coincide with Trade Season, those ten days or so in advance of the trading deadline (usually July 31st, this year for some reason August 2nd). There will be another post regarding the mini-hiatus later, but for now, let's recap what transpired in the wheeling and dealing frenzy.

As far as Your Seattle Mariners are concerned, things started early, all the way back on June 27th when they traded Triple-A reliever Wyatt Mills and Class-A starting pitcher William Fleming to Kansas City for first baseman Carlos Santana. (That was to address an immediate temporary need created by Ty France's brief stint on the injured list, but still we'll count it as part of the overall shakeup around the leagues.)

But the big trade was pulled off a few days before the deadline—on July 30th the M's made a deal with the Cincinnati Reds, acquiring All-Star starting pitcher Luis Castillo for four choice prospects (including shortstop Noelvi Marte). Castillo was a target for the Mariners going back to the offseason, but general manager Jerry Dipoto couldn't get the Reds to include him in the trade that ultimately brought over Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker; by holding onto Castillo until July, the Reds succeeded in getting a bigger overall return from the M's, so good on them. Both Suárez and Winker were reportedly delighted to be reunited with their once and future teammate, Winker calling Castillo "an outstanding pitcher and an even better human being" and Suárez effusing "I’m so happy right now to be with him in the same clubhouse, and I know he’s going to love this team." Castillo delivered a win in his Mariner debut, going 623 strong innings against the Yankees in New York.

Other than that, the M's did a little tinkering around the margins, but nothing more of substance as the deadline came and went. Meanwhile, big names were on the move elsewhere in the American and National Leagues, none bigger than All-Star outfielder Juan Soto, one of the youngest trade-deadline superstar acquisitions in the history of time. Soto ended up in San Diego, Trey Mancini in Houston, Raisel Iglesias in Toronto, Joey Gallo in LA, and Eric Hosmer in Boston, among many others.

Here's a rundown on the details of the Mariner moves, then later those in the rest of the Major Leagues:

Aside from Santana and Castillo, the M's shored up their bench depth, suggesting some minor transactions to come in order to clear room for the likes of Lamb and Villar if their services are deemed desirable on the big-league roster. Casali is on the injured list with a strained oblique, though he had begun a rehab assignment. Boyd is likewise on the IL following flexor tendon surgery and isn't expected to be a factor until at least September if at all. Williams is an interesting case as he was with the Mariners in 2020; he was an inexplicable favorite of manager Scott Servais out of the bullpen until he was traded to the Padres in that year's mini-season.

The landscape changes for the National League West race with the Padres landing Soto and Bell for a boatload of prospects, and in the AL East the rich get richer in the Bronx with Benintendi, Montas, and Trivino donning pinstripes. The Astros get maybe the biggest surprise add in Mancini, and the surprising lack of action by the White Sox and Guardians feels a bit like a concession to the Twins this year—let Minnesota take it, try again in ’23.

Oh, and how must it feel to be a Reds fan right now. Ugh. We feel your pain, Cincy.
